A Primer on Marine Engineering

It was not that long ago that many people did not fully understand marine engineering. However, this field has grown in importance with each passing year. Today, the need for competent marine engineers is greater than ever before.

Basic Marine Engineering Facts

Marine engineering is defined as the field which deals with the development, design, production, and maintenance of equipment used at sea or on board boats, ships, and other sea vessels. It also focuses on the development and production of the internal systems of sea vessels.

Marine engineering involves the use and application of knowledge and information from other forms of engineering such as electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Such is the sheer size of this field that it has led to the development of related fields including nautical science, naval architecture, and oceanographic engineering.

The Study of Marine Engineering

A person who studies marine engineering does not only require much knowledge about the field itself. High levels of proficiency in mathematics and physics are required of anyone who desires to become a successful marine engineer. Mechanical, technological, and design knowledge will also be of much aid to a person involved in marine engineering.

One great benefit of studying marine engineering thus lies in the fact that knowledge and skills are typically transferable. Those who choose to leave the field someday can continue to apply what they have learned in order to find success in other fields. In addition, expertise and knowledge related to mathematics, physics, and technology are in perpetual demand because of these subjects’ wide range of uses. Those who intend to pursue a masters’ degree or anything beyond can even use this knowledge to inform their course selection.

Job Prospects for Marine Engineering Students

Job prospects for those who have studied marine engineering are relatively positive. Around the world, job opportunities for marine engineers are expected to increase by around 17%. This increase mainly comes from an elevated need for ships which transport energy products around the world.

In Malaysia, the average marine engineer can expect to earn more than RM58,000 every year. Although starting salaries are not always the most lucrative, they usually rise sharply after just one year of experience.

Diploma in Marine Engineering
